Bolg Gnollengrom's War Journal
by
Bri'n Cog'n

The following is an excerpt from the journal of Bolg Gnollengrom the legendary dwarf treasure hunter, as relayed by his own account. It is considered to be whole and truthful.

Week 1:

After the trek through the empire of man, it was good to finally arrive at the ruined city. Such pitiful structures that crumble so easily would make any serious dwarf turn away in disgust, however men will part with large sums of gold for the mere stones that lay about the streets in abundance. Humans are a funny sort.. too lazy to go and fetch the rocks themselves, yet too concerned with imagined valour, that they lavish tales of horrible creatures and happenings too ward off accusations cowardice. I come accompanied by 3 stout clansdwarfs of Clan Runk, with them they bring trusted axes weilded with both hands, sure and sturdy crossbows, solid helms, and worthy sheilds to ward off the depraved and dishonorable. I myself am equiped the same way. I also have in my charge two of the Drengi who have abandoned family names and re-emerged under the titles Az and Grund. They wish to meet their destiny amid the ruined city, dependent upon the tales of the humans, equiped with naugth but and axe in each hand. We made camp outside the city and will venturein within the next week.

Week 2:

Upon our initial advance into the ruins, it became redily appearent that we were not alone in our quest. A band or wretched elves presented themselves in our way, demanding that we turn back and leave the stone for them. Not, taking such treatment kindly I personally demanded satisfaction on the spot, to which the elven commander readily agreed. Those elves should have known better than to get into a _Street Fight_ with dwarves, particularly dwarves with crossbows. two of them set back and tried sniping at the Clansdwarfs of Runk, but found that stout dwarven skin more than a match for puny elven arrows. Meanwhile as three of their number advanced intent upon inflicting harm with their treacherous elven blades, two met their dooms to crossbow bolts and the rest fled like cowardly curs. The area was searched and enough stones where found to buy Clan Runk 3 new suits of light armour..

Week 3:

On our weekly rock hunt, we came upon a group of human mercenaries from the land of middenheim. These sort of men are seemingly quite common amoung the streets of the ruined city. They cam at us with superior numbers, but being crafty dwarfs we took the opportunity to seize some higher ground that all of us took save the two Drengi who braced for combat. with skilled shooting the Runk Clan was able to drop two of their number, while losing only one member to their cowardly human bows. The Drengi both gained the chance to charge two of the human minions, which turned out to be a treacherous trap, causing them to be set upon but multitudes of the men of middenheim. Grund succumbed to the vile backstabbing tactics of the middenheimers after taking one down, but Az single handedly slew 3 of their number, causing them to scamper away like scared goblins. The fallen Clansdwarf of Runk made a full recovery as did Grund much to his chagrin. we found enough stone to buy a suit of light armour for myself and sent for a new engineer to join our ranks.

Week 4:

The new engineer arrived just in time as before he could even introduce himself we were ambushed by Skaven in a _Surprise Attack_. We may not know the new engineer's name, but we certainly know what he is made of! He charged a Skaven assassin adept and stood toe to toe with him for 3 full exchanges of strikes.. The truly amazing part about this was he came only equiped with a helmet and a dagger! The assassin finally flung him from atop the ruined tavern which they were fighting on, to the cold unforgiving cobblestones below. In the meantime I put a crossbow bolt through the shoulder of their sorceror, before a hail of stones robbed me of my consciousness. Az charged a small group of skaven from out of nowhere, giving us a slight hope, but he went down to their blades, and is now sporting a vicious leg wound that has slowed him down considerably. when I woke up, the new engineer
was carrying the unconscious body of the sorceror and the rest of the warband was in full retreat. As much as it pained me to do so I engaged in trade for the rat-sorceror to the tune of 60 gold crowns, combined with the other 35 or stone selling brought was enough to buy a suitable double handed weapon and a new suit of dwarf armour for our nameless engineer. The enigneer still hasn't told us his name, but he really doesn't say anything much anymore.. It appears the fall has left him in a state of _frenzy_ whenever there is a battle about... Oh and those vile rat-men have left me with some Scars that some may find a bit Fearsome... This is when the Dwarfs began calling me "Gnollengrom".. because I was wise enough to salvage a minor victory out of a resounding defeat..
